Attitude

Lily - Kentucky, 2010My friend Dan says he can distill his photographic life down to 20 or so images. I've been shooting a long time and I could probably say the same thing. The great images just don't happen all that often. But for me this is one of the images that I instantly think will be included in my life's images.

Lately

Adian - May, 2010My nephew Jake graduated over the Memorial weekend so I headed to Kentucky for the festivities. It's always a good chance to photograph the family and put some more images in the bank, so to speak, as we all grow older.

Baggage Handlers

My personal baggage handlers, Louisville, KY - 2010I needed to go to Kentucky in February to take care of some personal stuff and these 4 greeted my at the airport upon my arrival. it was a very pleasant surprise. My nephews family provides some good opportunities for image making when I am in Kentucky. I'm close to them, and the kids love it when I come to town. Well, at least they do in my mind.

Alex and Adian decided that they needed to lug the bags out to the car. I'm pretty sure the bag weighed more than Alex, and maybe both of the together. But they were troopers and made it almost all of the way. I knew something would present itself but I only had Tri-X in the camera and I had it set for 400 instead of my usual 1250 for Diafine development. Low light levels in the airport was a bit of a problem but I went with it. When Alex finally turned around I made the image.

Who knows where this image will find itself at some time down the road. Will Alex remember doing this? Will it be something he identifies as unique to his relationship to me? Will any of the kids remember this evening?

As usual, I don't have the answers. But I keep trying.

Happy New Year

In Remembrance - Larene A. Pace, February 19, 1928 ~ June 22, 2009Happy 2010! This has been a great year but it was also bittersweet. I’ve been fortunate enough to be surrounded by a wonderful family and great friends.  We’ve gotten through some of the toughest times this year together and will continue to do so.

I traveled over 150,000 miles and was able to visit China, Japan and the United Kingdom. I met a lot of interesting people along the way and I had a chance to photograph some of them. I think I made some of my favorite images this year, and I was fortunate enough to have met several photographers that have been helpful in making my images better and I’m grateful.  I'm hopeful this will show in my images in the coming year.

Going into 2010 I remain optimistic about the world we live in and where it’s going. I’ve got a great wife and daughter, a loving family back in Kentucky as well as here in California. For all of you, for my friends and acquaintances, I wish you a Happy New Year.
