Alpine, TX

Alpine, TX - July, 2010Flags in the United States, more so than any other place I've ever been, are readily displayed throughout the country, whether it be rural or urban. While walking around Alpine, TX last week this was evident but not surprising. We seem to be a very patriotic country whatever that means in this day and age.

There were two things that promoted this little exploration of Alpine. I just got a new John Prine album that included Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore, a song he brought out of retirement in concert appearances over the last few years. The other was a scene I saw as I drove down a side street. Any other time it would be likely that I would pass the image by, too busy to actually see it. Since I had nowhere I needed to be, I stopped, walked by the house several times and started making images. It's probably the start of a project but we'll see.

This is an outtake of some of those images. I liked it immediately once I saw it on the light table and decide to invest a few moments scanning it while sheet film is in the fixer. How it fits in an overall scheme of a possible project remains to be seen. I think it's likely it won't fit but I'll have to look at it over time to really determine it's worth.

Kevin German

Photographers with a creative energy that manifests itself in the images they show, provide a visual stimulation that has always drawn me to photography. If they happen to reside in a country or location I've always wanted to visit, I'm provided with a glimpse of a culture, location or society that has some interest to me. It's always been this way for me.

Kevin German is part of a group of photographic cooperative and I really enjoy his work. I admire his ability to chase his dream and make it work. I don't know him except what I read on his blog and what I see in his images. I may be reading way too much into this but it seems that he's found a way to chase his dream.

I found this particular post interesting.

Ed Grazda

Dan Milnor has brought us an interview with a photographer and it's well worth the read.  Take a moment and jump over there to read the interview about Ed Grazda. It will only take a few moments to read but will provide information on a photographer that's worthy of attention.  And jump over to the Vanity Fair article referenced in the interview as well.  Written by Mr. Grazda himself it's an interesting account of a chance encounter.
