Alpine, TX

Alpine, TX - July, 2010Flags in the United States, more so than any other place I've ever been, are readily displayed throughout the country, whether it be rural or urban. While walking around Alpine, TX last week this was evident but not surprising. We seem to be a very patriotic country whatever that means in this day and age.

There were two things that promoted this little exploration of Alpine. I just got a new John Prine album that included Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore, a song he brought out of retirement in concert appearances over the last few years. The other was a scene I saw as I drove down a side street. Any other time it would be likely that I would pass the image by, too busy to actually see it. Since I had nowhere I needed to be, I stopped, walked by the house several times and started making images. It's probably the start of a project but we'll see.

This is an outtake of some of those images. I liked it immediately once I saw it on the light table and decide to invest a few moments scanning it while sheet film is in the fixer. How it fits in an overall scheme of a possible project remains to be seen. I think it's likely it won't fit but I'll have to look at it over time to really determine it's worth.

Attitude

Lily - Kentucky, 2010My friend Dan says he can distill his photographic life down to 20 or so images. I've been shooting a long time and I could probably say the same thing. The great images just don't happen all that often. But for me this is one of the images that I instantly think will be included in my life's images.

Making Images One at a Time

Santa Monica Pier, April 2010Most of my images are made one image at a time as I travel, go through the day taking part in my daily routine or when I purposely go in search of images. It's often difficult to classify them into categories and I struggle with how, and where, to display them.

Upcoming Workshop - Beyond The Snapshot

Cloverport Bridge - February, 2010If you've read through this blog at some point you may be aware that I love photojournalism. It's where my true passion in photography lies even though I drift all over the place photographically. I started out as photojournalism major at Western Kentucky University back in 1978 studying under Jack Corn and Mike Morse. I was even fortunate enough to act as a gopher on some of the early Mountain Workshops, developing film for the participants (stressful) and getting a chance to listen in on the critiques and discussions. How I ended up where I am today is another story, but the passion for telling stories with a camera lingers even today.

So I've signed up for a workshop in Santa Fe called "Beyond The Snapshot" with Dan Milnor. I really wanted to take his recent workshop in Peru but life got in the way and I wasn't able to do so. Thankfully, Dan is teaching again in Santa Fe and I get another chance. Dan writes about the workshop, and some of his experiences with workshops over the years, over at Smogranch

This will be my second workshop at the Santa Fe Workshops. I took one several years ago and it's one of the best workshop experiences I've ever had. No phone! No email! Just photography! The programs are well run and it really is an immersive experience if you let it be so. Santa Fe is a great place and I'm looking forward to getting there and jumping in.

I'm taking this particular workshop because I like the way Dan approaches photography and shares what he knows. And while all my other photography is fun, my passion lies with being able to tell a story. I want to get back to the roots of why I became so enthralled with photography as a kid. And I think I can jump start this process with some guidance from Dan, as well as the other participants in this workshop.

He's also targeting like minded people for the class which is really appealing to me since I'd rather not be in a workshop having to listen to questions on how to operate a camera. Read his description and if it appeals you, Santa Fe in July fits into your schedule, and you want to hang with a group of people completely immersed in photography, sign up, bring some passion, and come join in the process.

Food For Thought

Cloverport Garage - 2010I came upon this blog, a "collection of creative pick-me-ups: visual, written or otherwise" from Dan Milnor's side bar of tweets. Take a quick look at this quote and give it some thought.
